Len Goldsmith Award

The Goldsmith Foundation, created through the generosity of former Head of Science Len Goldsmith, seeks to encourage students of The Skinners’ School to follow university courses in Medicine or Engineering by the award of up to three Student Bursaries.

It is proposed that each year, awards of £2,000 will be made to one potential student of Medicine and two students intending to follow some kind of Engineering course at Medical School or University.  The award will be renewed annually for the duration of the student’s first degree course; renewal being dependent upon a successful outcome in yearly examinations or assessments.

Applicants are invited to apply during their final year of study by requesting application forms from Mr Fleming (they will also be available on the School’s website).  Completed forms are to be returned to Mr Fleming by 31 March of the year of application.  They will then be forwarded to the awarding panel for consideration and a short list will be drawn up.  Candidates on this short list will then be invited to an interview with the awarding panel.  Successful candidates will be notified within one week of the interview.  Though the intention is to make a total of three such awards annually, the awarding panel reserve the right to increase this number by one or two should there be a particularly strong list of applicants in any one year.  The initial award and subsequent renewal will be entirely at the discretion of the Trustees of the Goldsmith Foundation.

To be considered, applicants should be applying to read either Medicine or some form of Engineering at University in the year immediately following their application.  Should a successful candidate fail to secure a university place in the prescribed year, then his award will be forfeited.  However, a successful student intending to take a gap year before taking up his place may defer the award until his further studies commence; this assumes that his University or Medical School place is guaranteed before he leaves school.
